What is The Midnight Movie?

Other than the standard explanation that we show old movies at midnight, The Midnight Movie is more than that. The simple way of describing us is we show cult movies to movies so bad they are good.

Rather than have horror hosts made up we have "Normal" hosts. But more about them later.

The movies themselves are from an era where movies where made for entertainment on a slim budget. There was a time in America that movie theaters would show main feature followed by a shorter second film refereed to as the B movie. The B movie was typically a low budget flick. This was before the Internet and Television.

Then there were the drive-in theaters. They had their own B movies. Some drive-ins would show two or three cheaply made movie a night.

And lastly came TV movie horror hosts.

At one time every station had one. Movie buffs can fondly remember their favorite.

The staple of horror hosts where the cheaply made monster movies of the 50's and 60's.

As TV has changed over the year so have local produced Horror hosts. Stations are more likely to have infomercials than a scary guy introducing a bad movie.

Yes, we like showing old movies but not just any type of movie. During our eight years on cable we showed classic Hollywood fare to rare schlock drive-in movies. It was always our belief that The Midnight Movie referred to a time of day to show movies but the type of movie. Cult movies that are (depending on your age) scary and funny. For older viewers the movies represented an early time, a better time. For younger viewers the movies could be a source of humor or how crude movies where back in grandpa's day.

No matter how you feel about cult moves, B movies or schlock movies you watch for one reason or another.

The Midnight Movie embraces all movies the good the bad and the ugly.

The hosts of The Midnight Movie

For eight years Dave Shurmer hosted with a wit all his own. Sometimes he was witless but viewer watched no matter how lost Dave would get during an interview.

Dave was the main man, the rock, the star of the show. His passion was always to entertain you the viewer. His talents held the show together even when he didn't know what was going on.

Eric Johnson was Dave's first CO host. Truth be told, we don't know if Eric ever liked any of the movies we aired. All he was interested was entertaining the viewers and himself with his jokes. He would at any chance tease Dave about his short comings. Once he felt he had run out of jokes about Dave's stutter or weight Eric asked to leave the show. But like a nagging headache he never really left. He would pop in ever so often to see if our jokes had gotten any better. Once he found out they didn't (which took him only a few minutes) he would leave us again as fast as his car go? If you ever see him and you can ask him about his time on the show he'll probably ask you "what show?"

Mike Perzel was Eric?s replacement. Mike didn't have Erics erratic presentation or comic madness but he did have a willingness to put himself out there in ways that was funny. When we needed someone to fall down... Mike was our man. Mike once said "The more I hurt during a skit, the funnier the skit." The more comfortable Mike got in front of the camera the more he opened up and told viewers how he felt on the issues. The issues being what bothered him. From bad drivers to people bothering him at work. Mike controlled the web site during the time we where on Cable. After three years Mike needed some time away from the show and stepped down from his CO host duties.

This allowed Ritch Yarber to take the blue chair next to Dave.

Originally Ritch was a viewer of the show in its first year. He soon became one of the support players to being the head writer for the show. Yes, we have a writer but we rarely wrote anything down on paper. Ritch over saw most of the skits and how they should play out. His accent to CO host was one of his childhood dreams. Dave and Ritch worked well together with Dave always knocking Ritch and his manic humor. Ritch the trouper he is never allowed Dave to sour his mood.

Supporting Players

Bobby the Voice has been with the show since the beginning. He's really a sweet guy that does his best to make the show what is it. Bob not only plays the folly for most of our skits he also produces many of out remote locations like Cedar Point.

Diane came down to the show when asked by Mike. A film fan prior to coming down she brought some dignity to a crazy set. When Dave didn't know about a fact about the movie she would be one to go to. She and Ritch would joke that soon that they would be hosting the replacement show of The Midnight Movie, The Afternoon Movie. This has yet to happen.

Jen worked behind the camera for the show. At first she wished be hidden from the cameras so her job was to be the technical director. With time, and some prodding from the producer she ended up in front of the camera. She even did an interview with Larry The King Lawyer of World Wrestling Fame.

Denny is a late bloomer to the show. His only desire is to come down to the show and help out and have fun at the same time. At first he assisted only behind the camera to now appearing in skits.

There are more great people that helped out on the show. Check back soon learn who else appeared on the show.

The Future of The Midnight Movie?

Yes, there is a future for The Midnight Movie.

What it is, is something the producer is working on. That's what this site is all about.

Will the show ever return to Cable?

Nothing is for sure. We had eight years on cable, longer than some network programs. Right now we're only on the Web. Ever so often we will be putting out a web show for you to enjoy.

If you have a question about the show or about the hosts go to our E-mail page or Viewer Comments page.
