A Midnight Movie Story

IT

By Brian Foster

05/28/2009

Why are you kids still up, question Julia. None of you should be up, walking around at this hour.

The Fire went out and I couldn’t sleep, Said the little blond boy. Two little girls next to him agreed.

No worry, I have my lantern here. With it on, nothing evil will come near us.

Julia walked to the center of the ten little kids and sat down on the ground.

As she said down she jester for them to sit down with her.

That reminds me of a story about this camp, does any one want me to tell you it?

All ten kids shook their heads in agreement to hear the story.

I will tell you the story as I heard it said Julia. It’s never safe to venture around this camp at night.

I’m not a kid, Said the red head boy, I’m eleven.

I’m far older than you, Julia said in an old gravely voice. Heed this tail that I will tell you.

Julia paused looking at each child.

Once she saw she had their attention she continued with a pleasant tone. I will have to warn you of one of the rules that the director of the camp doesn’t tell everyone.

What’s that, asked one little blond boy.

Julia turned her lantern to get a better look at the boy.

There are too many rules already, said a little girl next to the blond boy.

This one, Julia retorted, may save your life.

We’re all safe if we stay here near the camp fire.

The little blond boy looked at the burnt out fire. Should we restart the fire then?

No, Julia said calmly, This lantern will suffice. Once I tell you the rule, we better get into our tents.

What’s the rule, shouted a red headed boy.

One can wander the camp grounds at night. Not unless they have something to light there way, like this lantern.

Why is that, asked a little girl with a pink pony on her pjs?

At night when there is no moon, like tonight, the creature only known at IT, comes out and haunts this camp ground.

That’s not a scary name; IT said the red head boy. Sounds dumb.

From what I know, if you knew more, a small smile creeper onto Julia’s face, then you wouldn’t say that.

Does this concern you telling us a scary story, asked the girl with a pink pony on her pjs

Ya, like a camp fire story, said the blond boy.

You need a fire for that you dweeb said the little girl with pink pony on her pjs.

Like I said, I think my lantern will suffice. It’s gotten me out or more trouble than you can shake a stick at. But enough of that, Julia hunched her back and continued her story while holding her lantern to her face.

They say that when before the camp ground was being built a man dressed in a suit and tie with leather briefcase was came here to sell play ground equipment. The owners told the man that they already had bought what they needed. Not giving up, the man was persistent but the owners finally had to tell the man they did not intent to buy anything from him. By this time, the sun was setting. The man in a huff walked away into the woods never to be seen again.

What, said the blond boy, never again?

The man never made it back to his car. Half way between his car and the camp the owners found his leather briefcase lying near one of the many marshes pits that surround this camp. Julia paused looking at each child.

After the camp opened there where tails of the salesman disappearance; of how he might have fallen into the marsh and being consumed by it. The Tails of the salesman were told late at night around campfires. Julia looked at the kids and saw they where loosing interest.

The Camp Director back then had a pet dog. A beautifully dog that all the kids in the camp loved. On the last night of camp, the Director held the very first sleep over. Seeing how the camp loved her pet dog, she allowed them to keep the faithful dog with the campers during the night.

During the night the dog heard something moving in the marsh pits and ran off into the dark.

The little girl with the pink pony on her pjs let out a small screech from fear.

The Director followed to rescue her faithful dog. As the Camp Director headed towards her barking pet she called out its name. What ever it was barking at had the dogs’ full attention.

She was fearful that the barking dog would wake the children of the camp. As she neared the sound of barking dog the Camp Director heard a low groaning and then a high pitch wine of pain from her pet. She paused to listen to what sounded like screams of terrible pain. The Camp Director ran towards the sounds. Before she could reach the sound, the terrible screams ended. The pit of her belly was relieved for the screams to end. But she feared what that meant for her trusty companion.

Julia heard the red head boy say, No not the puppy. She contained her story.

The Camp Director soon came up to where she thought the sounds came. That’s when she saw IT!

Julia screamed the word causing all kids to jump back just a little.

Even in the moonless night she was able to see a hulking shape. It has a slight glow raiding from it. She stopped is shear terror. IT stood over eight feet tall. She stood there silent not knowing what to do.

The little girl with the pink pony pjs gripped onto the red head boy’s arm with all her might. His attention was focused on Julia’s story and didn’t notice the little girls hold.

Julia Continued.

The IT turned towards the camp Director. The Director held her breath as IT seemed to move as she wasn’t even there. IT turned again and moved off into the marsh and disappeared. After she could no longer see the glow of IT, The Director took in a deep breath. She looked around where she stood and was horrified to see parts of her friendly dog lying all around her.

Julia paused again looking at the eyes of the children.

The next day the Camp Director quit the camp and never worked here again.

The blond boy looked like he was going to cry.

For years the camp owners wouldn’t allow any sleep over at the camp.

That is until a new a new Camp Director came to work here. He heard the stories of the lost salesman and the dog being torn to little pieces by IT.

That summer that he was Camp Director he would tell all the campers that IT didn’t exist and he was going to prove it.

The red head boy smiled and said, about time.

Near the end of summer the new camp director announced that he had convinced the owners to let him hold a sleep over at the camp on the last night of camp.

The children at that time where thrilled.

All went well that night until everyone went to sleep.

The owners only allowed the new camp director to have the sleep over if he stayed up kept watch.

He did this proudly. I hear tell he was a former police man and was used to such things.

That last night of camp all was calm. The new Camp Director woke once of his councilors that he heard something moving out near the marsh pits.

The young woman told him that to say away from the pits because that’s where the IT was.

The new camp director said that was only a fairly tail and headed off with his flashlight.

The young woman couldn’t stand there as he walked away. So she followed him. It was pitch black that moonless night as she followed the director. Then suddenly he stopped cold and froze. She didn’t hear anything other than the crickets and then they stopped their chirping. She hand never heard total silence before. All she cold see was the outline of the Director from his flashlight. Her heart started to beat heavily as she heard a low thud sound. Something huge was moving. She couldn’t tell from what direction. She didn’t know if the Director heard the awful noise so she yelled at him.

The Director turned to her and told her to get back to the camp.

Julia eyes opened wide causing her audience of little kids to shudder.

Julia almost seemed to be salivating at what she was about to tell them.

As Julia spoke, little drops of spittle few out of her mouth.

The young woman saw something, a glow emerge from out of the darkness just behind the Director.

Get out of here, Screamed Julia said in her best male voice. These sudden changes of tone frighten the kids even more.

Julia tone returned to her pleasant tone. That was the last words the young woman heard come from the Director, other than the screams he made as IT tore him to pieces.

The young women stood there and watched as the Director was ripped apart.

Julia paused again. This time she smiled and said. Well it’s time for all of you to get some sleep.

What happened next the kids said as a collective?

Julia thought it over tapping on the top of her lantern.

Do you really want to know how it ends?

The kids’ heads shook up and down waiting for her to continue.

The young woman stood there in pure horror at what she saw. From its shear size, IT was finished with the director in a few minutes. Then she felt that he was leaving. She thought about the camp stories and wanted physical proof. As it turned away she ran towards IT. She saw that the directors’ flashlight was still on and picked it up. As the IT moved way from her she pointed the light at IT. Was she saw terrified her and confused her at the same time. The low glow was till there be all she could see within the beam of the light was moss, twigs and mid and nothing else.

The IT stopped sensing the light. IT turned towards her and started towards her. As IT turned she could see that it wasn’t an animal. It was a monster of nature. It didn’t have a defined neck the mass that she guessed that was its head slopped into the body. The arms where made up of rotting wood and mud. She didn’t dare turn back to the IT. She walked backwards as IT approached her. By the flashlight she could tell that maggots where crawling over the entire body of IT.

Then something her foot slipped on something. Her mind instantly thought that it was a piece of flesh that was once the directors. As he landed on her back she tried to think of something else that she could have tripping on.

The sounds of the moving mass filled her ears. She pointed the flashlight towards the sound. The IT monster was almost on top of her.

Julia opened her mouth and screamed a blood curling scream at the top of her lungs.

All the kids jumped as one.

The young woman screamed in terror. IT was reaching out to her and then stopped. Its elephant thick arm was only inches from her. She screamed again with all her might.

The thick arm pulled away from her. The young woman continued to scream, as she did IT moved slowly away from her.

Julia stood setting down the lantern.

The young woman stood still screaming. IT stumbled and seemed to loose it’s balance. With a horrible sound, IT fell backwards and in a splatter of flying debits landing on the ground.

The young woman felt little bits of IT hit her causing a slight burning where ever they touched.

She walked over to where IT lay. With the light of the flashlight she saw \he mass of dead and rotting wood, mud and maggots lay there. Then she stopped and saw what lay at the center of IT.

A human skeleton was partly visible nestled with in the maggots, mud and dead wood.

She stood there looking at the white skeleton. The young woman heard people coming and she ran towards them.

She was met with the other councilors of the camp. She told them of what happened. They too had heard the stories and where afraid.

Come she told them. I killed IT. She led them to where she left the skeleton.

All saw that the ripped pieces of the Director littered the area and some dead rotten wood. But there were no signs of a skeleton anywhere. She went to where IT had landed and there was nothing there but grass. The mass had disappeared as it had never been there.

What happened next asked the red headed boy.

The Rule is you don’t walk around at night at camp, or IT will get you. If you hear late at night movement off in the marshes pits. Stay in your tent. Leave IT alone.

Julia smiled. She then picked up her lantern.

Now it’s time for sleep. It’s very late and all of you need to be up at sunrise.

We want another story, demanded the little girl with the pink pony pjs.

Well I could tell you the one about the Mole People... Julia looked around the camp and then retuned her gaze towards the ten kids.

That’s a story for next summer. Now get to bed.

The kids all hurried into there tents as fast as their little legs would allow.

Julia turned and started to walk away.

The little blond boy popped his head out from his tent wanting to ask a question. In shock he forgot his question as she watched as Julia tuned off her lantern as she walked away. His eyes opened wide in terror as he saw a faint glow emanate from Julia’s body.
